AYSK: Chi-Town Edition
ON THE HORIZON….
A term used to imply that something or someone is just emerging, but expected to be great. This the title that I will give to this episode of Artists You Should Know. The three young people reviewed here are some amazing talents that I think will emerge to become huge successes.
To be clear, we are not featuring this artist because his project is new. We are featuring it because we know that there is something coming down the pipeline and we want our readers and followers to be well-ahead of the curve when it surfaces. “The Greatest” is a sneak peek of the style and control that this young man, Tristian Arnez, has been developing from an early age.
The song hearkens back to when music had a purpose other than to entertain and make money. Music has always had the charge to excite, comfort and encourage. As we scurry to find music that is appropriate for graduations and events that celebrate success for our youth, Tristian has given us a shimmer of hope and a message that transcends borders. The quality production is there and it tells me that there are people around him that not only respect his talent, but have knowledge of music – much needed for a young singer. Get in on the ground floor of what is sure to be a breakout career for this young man. I’ve not heard a solo artist do such a song since Tevin Campbell’s “Tomorrow” or the late Whitney Houston’s classic, “The Greatest Love of All“. The quality production is definitely heard and it tells me that there are people around him that not only respect his talent, but have knowledge of music – much needed for a young singer.
Get in on the ground floor of what is sure to be a breakout career for this young man. I regret posting any videos or music here because he has grown into young adulthood and further developed his sound with a more mature voice. Any of his earlier recording would simply do an injustice to this virtuoso today. However, his smoothness and awkward shyness make him endearing to audiences today. He is an humble young man with loads of talent. Note the hints of Maxwell and Michael Jackson in his young voice while watching this video. Download “The Greatest”, check him out on YouTube and keep your ear to the ground. There is more to come.
Here is a snippet of Tristian from way back when…
For the same reason that Tristan Arnez is being featured, we include Terrell Hunter. There are great things to come for this young man. Simply stated, Terrell Hunter is a young artist – in the truest sense of the word. Let me point that out in the onset because his talent and acute performance knowledge belie his age. In 2015 he debuted a song entitled “Work In Me” and it was met with so much applause that it has become a runaway hit.
While there are certainly many things I can point out, I keep reflecting on the fact that he and Mr. Arnez are very young, which is staggering considering the amount of talent they possess. However young, as the video shows, Hunter is passionate about what he does and the words he sings. He is confident and knows exactly what he wants on stage from the orchestration, to the mood set by the accompanying vocals, to the control of his own voice. Hunter is very calculating in the presentation he delivers. He is a “church boy”, holding to tradition, but alienates no one by also relating to his age group — a very rare trait many artists his senior don’t quite grasp. “Work In Me” hasn’t been released yet and I give full permission to anyone reading this to inundate him with emails, messages and texts until he does. It is a great song worth recording and Hunter is a great talent worth watching.
Here is a glimpse into the greatness that is Terrell Hunter.
Modern “conversations” often take place over email or social media. I had one such encounter with an artist named Jarvell Bell. He was brought to my attention by my younger brother and I fell in love with a song called “….”. When compiling information for this season of AYSK, I knew I had to reach out to him and our conversation went like this:
Cribbsification: Mr. Bell, my name is Marlowe Cribbs and DeVon Willingham allowed me to hear your project. I went to purchase it myself and was not able to find it under your name – what a shame. Not only would I like a copy, but I would also like to feature it in my website series. Please let me know if obtaining a copy is a possibility. Thank you for your time.
JB: Hey Mr. Cribbs! Hope all is well. Unfortunately I had my project removed from all digital outlets a few months ago. Reason being, I am currently working on a few projects and will be recreating a few songs. I do however have a songs that I released three years ago still available for free online…. please be patient with me lol. I’ve grown a lot since then and I am working diligently to release a quality record . Thank you a ton and I am honestly humbled that you are reaching out and truly appreciate it!
Cribbsification: You have blown me over. I am going to include this reply into my article. I hope it’s alright to write a piece about you with the free song and tell my readers that there’s more to come. I am proud to connect with an artist of your humility and maturity. I look forward to great things.
JB: Awesome! Yes sir it is perfectly ok! I’m excited about this. If there is anything else you need please let me know.
This just speaks to the caliber of person this young man is. Not only was he ingratiating to speak with, but he did some introspection and decided what was important in his life and in the life of his artistry. You have to respect that.
In terms of his music, Jarvell’s song “Sound Mind” is produced as professionally as anything coming out of P.A.J.A.M. or MyBlock. Neither of those two can lay claim to this track. That honor goes to Ant Fields and what a great job he’s done. With the feel of anything you’re likely to hear on the current charts, the mastering and mix is top notch. The lyrics get right to the heart of what it means to be a young Christian. He reveals the appreciation for having that mentality that Second Timothy speaks of.
Bell’s other offering, an EP entitled “L.A.M.E.S.” features everything that we love about Mali and Travis Green in one attainable package. I’m looking forward to hearing what this reborn artist has in store for us in the future. Meanwhile, go to http://noisetrade.com/lames and download his music (I encourage you to leave a tip) and enjoy “L.A.M.E.S.” & “Sound Mind“. Precursors for what is to come.
Her West California address and years of experience should preclude her from being called a newcomer, but her music is getting the attention that I think it deserves and her roots are in the Windy City. I am absolutely in love with her music and wouldn’t at all be upset if I heard it on mainstream radio. It has the vibe and sound that rivals anything currently being played. I am not the only one who is in love with her music, but am surpassed by a man who is truly in love with — her! Husband, producer and master musician, Damien (Dammo) Farmer took his talents from Chicago to L.A. and the duo have been making things happen on the music scene since their feet hit the tarmac.
Rubi Green is a force to be heard and a sound to be appreciated. She unapologetically embraces R&B, Pop, and Hip Hop. Songs to make not of are “All Of My Help” (a personal favorite), “Heaven“, “Praise The Lord” and “More“. The accompanying video is that of her runaway hit “What’s Sup” that features her husband and is definitely a summertime banger (Yes, I did use that word). Let’s be clear, Rubi’s style and format is definitely contemporary. However she never once shies away from her Christian convictions. Using Scripture and Biblical principle to spread the Gospel with a sound that may be rejected by many church- goers, she is taking up the noble cause to reach those who other artists may not.
I hesitate to inform you that Rubi is from regal musical roots, not because I shouldn’t, but because I truly believe that this singer stand on her own merits. I would, however, be remiss if I didn’t mention her family. Her mother is Evangelist Shirley Green – a powerhouse of a singer and carrier of God’s Word. Her father has spread Love and Happiness for over four decades — the legendary Reverend Al Green. It’s no wonder that, with a progressive producer like Ethan by her side, she continues to garner attention. Most recently, by her own publishing organization, SESAC, for her work amazing work with Eric Benet. Grab all of her music from SoundCloud while you can and check her out during the Fusion Road Tour. This power couple shouldn’t surprise you in a few years when they are nominated for a Grammy. Why? because you read it here that Rubi Green is not only part of a great musical bloodline, she is half of a power couple that will give Jay & Bey a run for their money, a hugely gifted singer who expresses her principals and convictions through a multiplicity of styles and an Artist You Should Know.
